An “Aha!” moment for me happened some thirty-five years ago when I met with a small group led by our young priest, who was encouraging us in our personal prayer. Prayer is communication with God. He pointed out that each of us has our own style in conversation, our own ways of expressing ourselves, and our own way of communicating. Just as this true among ourselves, so it is also true with God! Aha! What a relief! I don’t need to “learn how to pray,” to learn a language or attitude, or to wonder, as someone recently asked, am I “making progress in my praying?” I can relax, be myself, and let the growing, the changing, the listening, and the learning happen.
