When my mother was dying of lung cancer, I took a Family Medical leave to spend the last five weeks of her life with her.  Day after day, I sat by her bed as she withered away.  After several weeks I was emotionally, physically and spiritually exhausted.  I went for a walk in woods nearby and found myself weeping and singing “Peace Like a River” over and over.  Within the song lay my fervent prayer for courage.  By the time I got back to her room, God had given me the strength I needed to be fully present with her, right to the end.  It was a gift for which I will always be grateful.
