CHRIST-LIKE HOSPITALITY TO CHILDREN & YOUTH

KIDS IN COMMUNITY OPENS JULY 6 WITH JON EDEN IN CHARGE

As Kids in Community prepares to open for its 5th summer, we rejoice to have the Rev. Jon Eden with us for the summer as KIC Coordinator. Jon just finished his two-year Lilly Endowment funded position as Assistant at St. James, Madison Avenue, New York City. As he plans his next step in ordained ministry, we are blessed to have him home for the summer and back with KIC. KIC registration is now open for elementary-age children. Friends and neighbors are welcome but registration is required because spaces fill and we have to turn children away. If you have time or talent you can offer in support of our work with Kids in Community, please speak with the clergy because Jon needs lots of help as he jumps into this fast moving stream of KIC.

OASIS COMMUNITY YOUTH GROUP

The teens of Oasis and the Spot are committed to making a difference. They did most of the work around parking lot clean up before the Bishop's visit in June. They created billboards and built a house to raise issues of concern and call people to hope and action. They designed "I Count" t-shirts and served as the floor team for the ECCO meeting with Mayor Clancy about funding for positive youth development program in the city. They prepared questions about the Commonwealth’s priorities for Governor Patrick and attended the Town Meeting on the Common. Oasis is on the move and adults who want their lives touched and transformed are needed to work with our young people. In July, Oasis continues to gather on the 2nd and 4th Fridays (July 10th and 24th) for faith and fellowship. They'll also be around as Kids in Community mentors and garden tenders. Keep your eyes out for their fund raisers, like "The Heart of Lynn" on July 25, so that you can support them in their work. On August 16 we will be off to New York City on a mission trip while our three from the Youth Leadership Academy go on mission to El Salvador. All teens are welcome in Oasis. Summer's a great time to get involved.

BARBARA C. HARRIS CAMP. All summer, St. Stephen's youth will be heading to New Hampshire to the Barbara C. Harris Camp. They will swim and play sports, do Bible study and worship, learn new skills and have a lot of fun! This year Natasha McFadden, Junior Mullings and Sam Gould will be counselors and over 20 children from St. Stephen's will be campers! Please pray that our youth will have a great time as they grow as individuals and as Christians.

DEEPENING COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

ECCO ACTION FOR YOUTH. On June 18 more than 150 people gathered at St. Stephen's to ask Mayor Clancy if he would support positive youth development programs and the E-Team. Although uncertainty around revenue resulted in the Mayor refusing to commit to supporting specific programs, he shared our concerns about the danger of increasing gang violence, the need for strong vocational education programs, and the importance of providing safe spaces for teens. Although he did not support the continuation of the Ford School Annex, he did support the expansion of the full service community schools model in Lynn. Come work with us at ECCO to preserve the Street Outreach Worker program, to create more teen drop-in centers like the Spot, and to open our public schools to parent and community use and support.

MY BROTHER’S TABLE IN THE SUMMER. July 26 and August 23 we join people from
First Lutheran Church to serve dinner at My Brother’s Table. If you can help serve from 1:30 to 4:30, we need you. Otherwise, you can help by bringing baked goods for dessert. Every Tuesday evening the “I Got Time Team” provides a ministry of compassionate presence at the Table. If
you are interested in being part of “I Got Time,” please speak with Judie Jones. On August 13,
My Brother’s Table holds their biggest annual fundraiser, The Garden Party. If you would like to attend or support the event through the ad book, please speak with the Rector or call Mary Magner at the Table.

OASIS COMMUNITY YOUTH GROUP PLANS SUMMER MISSION TO BIG APPLE. This August 9th-14th St. Stephen's teens are joining teens from the Merrimack Valley in a mission trip to NYC. There will be a variety of fundraisers in the coming months so please consider supporting them in their efforts to join other teens in making a difference.

Christ-like Hospitality to Young Adults

GIFTS AND TALENTS ARE GIVEN TO BENEFIT OTHERS NOT OURSELVES. We are all given talents and gifts that we have the responsibility to develop. Gifts and talents grow in effectiveness with use. For full effectiveness talents need to be developed. Professional athletes develop their talents through years of practice and hard work. Talents possessed by believers ought to be surrendered and consecrated to the Lord and used for His honor and glory. Gifts are given by God for the outworking of God's life as expressed by the Body of Christ. Our gifts need to be exercised and this can only happen if we stay spiritually healthy and grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. The proper exercise of spiritual gifts requires spiritual growth and maturity. Far and beyond, spiritual gifts are given to benefit others and not ourselves.

We have a choice to develop our gifts and talents when opportunity opens. The challenge at times is to identify areas that we are talented or gifted. Nonetheless, it is when we are dedicated in our work or doing what we need to do, that our talents and gifts surface. Though gifts and talents come in packages, it is the opportunities that come our ways that act as tool to unravel what is the package. At times we fail to seize the opportunity and keep it for another time never realizing that the more we push away opportunities the more we fail to capitalize on them. Furthermore, as we unravel our gifts and talents, the bottom line will be they are intended to be used on behalf of others, and not for our selfish purposes.
